The Name My Mother
Gave Me השם שאמי
נתנה לי
Saturday, March 13, 8:00 pm
Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy, Jewish Federation Campus
272 South Bryn Mawr Avenue
Bryn Mawr, PA 19010
A
year-long leadership training program takes Ethiopian-born and
Russian-born Israeli adolescents to the Jewish pockets of Ethiopia
to rediscover their unique heritage. This journey forces the young
Ethiopian Jews to confront memories and traditions that they left
behind in the old country. The dramatic Ethiopian terrain has a
tremendous impact on both the Ethiopians and the Russians, leading
them to some deeply moving resolutions about themselves as
individuals and as part of as a larger group.
The leadership training program (mechina) portrayed in “The Name My Mother Gave Me”
was founded by Yemin Orde Educational Initiatives. Mechina programs all over Israel
work with 18-year-olds from different sectors of society to prepare them for meaningful
service in the Israel Defense Forces and Yemin Orde is the only one specifically designed
for immigrant youth.
